Newborn Session Guide
Everything You Need To Know About Your Newborn Photography Session
Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life's most precious moments, and I am honoured to help you preserve these memories.
I understand that life with a newborn can feel overwhelming, which is why I've created this guide to help you feel prepared, relaxed and excited about your upcoming session.
My aim is to make the entire experience as enjoyable and stress free as possible for both you and your baby.
When Should I Book My Newborn Session?
The best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy, ideally after your 20-week scan.
I only accept a limited number of newborn bookings each month to ensure every family receives a personalised experience.
Once your baby arrives, we'll confirm the exact date for your session.
When Does The Session Take Place?
Newborn sessions are ideally photographed within the first 5–14 days after birth.
During this time, babies are typically sleepier, more settled, and naturally curl into those beautiful newborn poses.
However, beautiful images can still be created with older newborns, so please don't worry if your baby is already a few weeks old.
Where Does The Session Take Place?
Sessions take place in my warm and welcoming home studio in Guildford, Surrey.
Everything is prepared before you arrive, including wraps, blankets, props and accessories carefully selected to create timeless and natural images.
The studio is heated to keep your baby comfortable throughout the session.
Complimentary refreshments are available so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the experience while I photograph your little one.
How Long Does A Newborn Session Last?
Newborn sessions typically last between 2–4 hours.
This allows plenty of time for:
✓ Feeding
✓ Nappy changes
✓ Settling and comforting
✓ Cuddles and breaks whenever needed
Every session is completely baby-led, and there is never any rush.
Your baby's comfort and wellbeing always come first.
What Should My Baby Wear?
For most of the session, your baby will be wrapped or photographed in carefully selected outfits provided by the studio.
Simple, neutral styling helps keep the focus on your baby and ensures your photographs remain timeless for years to come.
What Should Parents Wear?
I recommend choosing soft, neutral tones such as:
- Cream
- Beige
- White
- Light grey
- Soft pastels
Avoid large logos, busy patterns and bright colours, as these can distract from the connection between your family members.
The goal is to create timeless photographs that won't feel dated in years to come.
Can Parents And Siblings Be Included?
Absolutely.
Family and sibling photographs are some of the most meaningful images from your session.
These portraits capture the love, connection and excitement of welcoming a new baby into your family and often become treasured favourites.
Is Newborn Photography Safe?
Your baby's safety is my highest priority.
I am trained in newborn posing and safety, and every pose is carefully achieved with your baby's comfort and wellbeing in mind.
Sessions are completely baby-led, and no pose is ever forced.
If your baby is uncomfortable, we simply move on to something else.
What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep?
Please don't worry.
Years of experience have taught me that every baby is different.
Some babies sleep throughout the entire session, while others prefer to stay awake and curious.
Beautiful photographs can be created either way.
In fact, awake images often capture wonderful expressions and eye contact that parents love.
What Happens After The Session?
Within a few days of your session, you'll receive access to your private online gallery.
From there, you'll be able to view your images and choose the collection that best suits your family.
Pricing and collection options are discussed with you before booking, so you'll know exactly what to expect.
Why Professional Prints Matter
Your photographs deserve more than a place on your phone.
Albums, folio boxes and wall art allow you to enjoy these memories every day and preserve them for future generations.
Many parents tell me that their newborn artwork becomes one of their most treasured possessions.
